The hip-dac2 replaces the inferior digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and amplifier circuitry of smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs to dramatically improve the sound of headphones.

Connect your device via USB, plug in your favorite wired headphones or in-ear headphones and the HIP DAC 2 delivers sound brimming with bold dynamism and smooth refinement.

The Burr-Brown DAC chip, selected for its smooth and very “musical” sound quality and its True Native architecture, as well as iFi custom circuitry, allows the HIP DAC 2 to deliver excellent sound quality in all digital audio formats, including bit-perfect PCM, native DSD and MQA.

The improved crystal clock eradicates jitter (digital distortion), using iFi's GMT femto precision clock system. This maintains the integrity of the digital signal until conversion to analog and improves sound quality.

Thanks to XMOS 16 core technology, the hip-dac2 is now an MQA decoder and no longer a simple renderer.

This allows you to play MQA audio files and streams, restoring the sound of the original recording. The LED lights green or blue to indicate that the device is decoding and playing an MQA stream or file, it indicates provenance to ensure that the sound is identical to that of the source material. It lights blue to indicate that it is playing an MQA Studio file, which has been approved in the studio by the artist/producer or has been verified by the copyright holder.

MQA rendering technology (used in the original HIP DAC among other iFi products) connects to an MQA Core signal (such as TIDAL) and performs final decoding of an MQA file. Usually, the computer did the decoding.

The HIP DAC 2 amplifier circuit, like the original, is of balanced design (Differential Balanced).

The circuit integrates a range of high-quality components, carefully selected for their performance in an audio context, including a custom iFi OV op-amp, TDK C0G Class 1 ceramic capacitors, a precision low-power power circuit Texas Instruments noise and a high-quality analog volume potentiometer.

The amplifier stage can deliver 400mW into a 32 ohm headphone load, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of headphone and earphone types with power to spare. Even high-impedance headphones are easily handled thanks to an output voltage of 6.3 V into 600 ohms (from the balanced output).

The amplifier stage has a switchable gain, which we call PowerMatch. This allows the attack level to be adapted to the load presented by the headphones, adjusting the input sensitivity and therefore the signal strength. Use the lowest setting with high sensitivity headphones. If your headphone requires more dynamism, use PowerMatch to increase the gain.

XBass is another user-selectable feature. This is a sophisticated form of bass boost that enhances low frequencies without muddying mid frequencies, which is particularly useful with open-back earphones and headphones that may lack deep bass. It operates entirely in the analog domain rather than intervening on the digital signal via DSP.
